Annetta Budhu has been part of the lesbian community since she came out at the age of 14. As a New Yorker, she’s seen bars and clubs come and go and recognized a void in the community for a place where professional, sexy women could socialize. For the last year, Annetta has put all of herself into building a place where real friends can unwind and let loose. Annetta shares her inspiration, passions, and vision for NYC’s newest and hottest girl bar.
What inspired you to open RF Lounge?
Being a part of the LGBT community in NYC I knew there was a void of upscale bars that cater to the lesbian community seven days a week. For years, my friends and I have constantly asked what we could do about having a bar that can cater to women like us. Things fell into place and the timing was right, so with the love and support of my Real Friends, I decided to build a space for all of us.
With dozens of bars for gay men in this city, why do you think there are so few full-time lesbian venues?
New York is very expensive, so it's difficult to support a seven-night-a-week lesbian club. Also, I think lesbians tend to nest at home a little more than gay men. I think many women have been waiting for a comfortable yet classy lesbian-specific venue that’s easily accessible…hence “RF” LOUNGE.
Look into your crystal ball…what do you see in RF’s future?
RF has created such a buzz in the lesbian community because of the caliber of women who were always looking for a venue that they can identify with…as for me I do see RF as my gift to the community and the appreciation from all Real Friends who keep coming back for more.
Can you comment on your recent recognition by the Stonewall Foundation?
That was a complete surprise to me and it was one of the most empowering moments in my life as a Lesbian women…to be among the other elites within the community who have dedicated so much of themselves to make a difference..I feel privileged to be among the honorees recognized.
What are your favorite things to do in NYC?
I am a New Yorker at heart and love the atmosphere and people of the City. Wandering in the West Village, going to local restaurants and experiencing all this great neighborhood has to offer are among my favorite things to do. I especially love walking on the Pier with my dog, Sydney and spending time with my girlfriend and friends, it doesn’t matter what we are doing, as long as its in NYC!
Outside of RF Lounge, what else keeps you busy?
My consulting business, my life with my partner, and dog and spending time with my family and friends.
What are some of the things you’re passionate about?
I’m a humanitarian at heart and love politics and the economy. Don’t get me started... ;)
